Conference on “National Dialogue on Local Governance” kicked off in Herat

Herat Jan 15, 2020: Independent Directorate of Local Governance IDLG with a consortium of 50 district governors and local authorities from Herat and Kabul, University professors, elders and CSOs held the National Dialogue on Sub-National Governance in Herat for two days.

In the opening remarks provincial governor Abdul Qayoum Rahimi welcomed the delegation and delivered a speech on the agenda of the conference. He said local government in district level play a key role in the administration, bringing improvements with their monitoring. Mr. Rahimi called the high ups to pay attention to further strengthen the departments and to focus on resolving the issues faced by them in terms of allocating resources.

Mr. Niazi Deputy Minister to IDLG said that, “The Central Government has demonstrated a genuine commitment to enhance the capacity of local actors, delivery of public services, rule of law, improve human development indicators and light the path for peace and lead to an end to the war in Afghanistan.”

Mr. Karimi head of local governance policy added that, “Local Governments are administrative bodies that carry out the functions in a specific geographical location, be it a village or a city. Improvement in local government remains a high priority in Afghanistan, but unless the relationship between citizens and government is more fully developed the actions of local government will not necessarily lead to improvement in the conditions of people’s lives.

The sub national governance conference was attended by high level authorities and finished on Jan 16, 2020.
